Scoppio Del Carro

The processional was really neat. Italians dressed up playing instruments and tossing flags paraded to the Duomo in front of an elaborate cart pulled by oxen.

The next part of the ceremony was less exciting. There were tons of people crowded together in the piazza...then it started to rain. Out came the umbrellas. But, I have to say, the experience was not ruined by all of the people or by the fact that I was standing between about 4 umbrellas that were draining onto my head or by the tips of the umbrellas that were poking me in the eye. It was, however, almost ruined by the obnoxious American students next to us. They were incredibly loud and annoying. I was so happy when the fireworks started because they were so loud that there were a few brief minutes where the the noise drowned out the Americans heinous chatter.

The rain actually disappeared as the cart was lit; everyone put down their umbrellas. It is a really cool tradition. And seeing a fireworks show with the Duomo as the background is pretty amazing. Buono Pasqua!

The Easter tradition here is to blow up a cart with fireworks, so I was definitely down for that. There was a huge parade leading up to the Duomo (massive church where the cart was to be blown up). The cart arrived at the Duomo being pulled by oxen that were dressed up with flowers in their hair. It's a good thing that we got there early or we wouldn't have been able to see a thing. I wasn't expecting too much, but I was blown away (pun intended) by the explosion of the cart. There was a fake dove that was set on fire that flew out of the church doors and into the cart which set off the explosion. The fireworks lasted probably 10-15 minutes. It was pretty cool to see. I got some video footage but cannot get it to post. Hooray Jesus!
